Having relocated our headquarters to Central Point, Portsmouth, we were honoured to embark on a significant clean-up contract for HMS Victory.

Portsmouth is a city steeped in maritime history and home to this iconic naval landmark.

Here’s how we got on.

The Challenge:

The challenge in the HMS Victory project involved addressing the accumulation of dirt, algae, and weeds in the ship’s dry dock, which is the oldest operational dry dock in the world.

Additionally, the project had to contend with structural issues like water leakage, cracks, corrosion, and the impacts of climate change on the Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, necessitating a careful and comprehensive conservation approach

Our Solution:

Our solution entailed employing the DOFF steam cleaning process, a specialist technique that uses steam under controlled pressure and temperature to effectively remove dirt, algae, and biological matter from the dry dock’s stone surfaces.

This method is particularly suited for historical structures, ensuring thorough cleaning without causing damage.

This preparatory step was essential for the subsequent stonemasonry preservation works, part of a larger conservation and renovation program aimed at preserving the integrity of HMS Victory and its dry dock.

Impact:

The impact of Vinci Response’s involvement in the HMS Victory project has been significant, ensuring the preservation of a national treasure and enhancing its cultural and educational value.

Through the application of the DOFF steam cleaning process and subsequent stonemasonry works, the project has not only addressed immediate conservation needs but also set a foundation for the long-term preservation of both the ship and its historic dry dock

This effort marks a critical contribution to safeguarding maritime heritage for future generations, demonstrating Vinci Response’s commitment to heritage conservation.

Conclusion:

Vinci Response’s involvement in the HMS Victory conservation project showcases our dedication to preserving historical landmarks.

By employing specialised cleaning techniques and contributing to the structural restoration, Vinci Response not only addressed immediate conservation challenges but also helped ensure the legacy of this maritime treasure for future generations.
