Guano (also known as bird droppings) can make your property look run-down and unprofessional and cause erosion as it is acidic.

Bird droppings can also cause harm to humans as they can carry diseases such as cryptococcosis and histoplasmosis.

Therefore, it goes without saying that when guano strikes, it should be removed as soon as possible.

Mould is also not something that you want to leave untreated.

In addition to being another cause of disease, if left untreated, mould can eventually affect the structure of the building.

All you want is your home or business to be back to normal as quickly as possible.

Our bird & pigeon guano removal and mould remediation & removal services can help ensure that your property is professionally cleaned and remediated.

1.0 Property

The clean-up job site was an attic in a residential property in Portsmouth.

2.0 Problem

Vinci Response were called to a loft that had had birds living in it for some time.

There was an assortment of bird droppings, feathers and mould throughout the attic.

Guano Removal from an attic

3.0 Resolution

It took two days to complete the job.

A HEPA vacuum cleaner, appropriate PPE and controlled plant based cleaning solutions were used to clean the attic area.

Vinci’s experienced team cleared and cleaned the loft space before undertaking guano decontamination and mould remediation.

Loft insulation and other contaminated items also had to be removed and safely disposed of.

The steps we take to clean guano are as follows:

  1. We first apply a safe, effective, and biodegradable cleanser and degreaser with a citrus basis to the guano.
  2. We start to remove the guano after it has been sufficiently dampened to stop any airborne particles from being produced. We do this by removing the guano onto a hand spade using scrapers, wire brushes, and soft brushes.
  3. The waste is then put into double-bagged, hazardous waste-designated debris bags. Once the garbage has been removed, these are cable tied.
  4. Additional repainting of cleaner and degreaser may be necessary during the cleaning process, depending on the amount of guano present, the time it takes to remove it, and the temperature we’re working in.
  5. Following the removal and disposal of all guano, we spray the area with a broad-spectrum disinfectant that is efficient against microorganisms and inhibits the creation of new microbes.
  6. Employees take off all of the disposable PPE and plastic sheeting that was utilised for clean-up. These materials are cable connected to two bags. Following a broad-spectrum disinfectant spraying, all trash bags are allowed to dry completely before being removed for secure off-site disposal.
  7. Due to the risks of guano, even though all of our operatives wear full PPE suits and gloves, they are instructed to thoroughly wash their hands and arms.

With so much guano present in such a small, poorly ventilated space, the guano could be dangerous for anyone who entered the loft.

Therefore, it was imperative that Vinci’s team had specialist safety equipment (gloves, glasses, coveralls, face masks, safety boots and head protection).

A safe method of access was also required to access the loft.

Following all works surface and air sampling was undertaken to ensure that the internal environment was safe and acceptable and all associated risks ‘normalised’.
